This 1987 limited series begins with a three-way conflict centered on the fate of Magneto, the Master of Magnetism. The story kicks off when Magneto is searching for the fragments of a mysterious asteroid that recently crashed on Earth.
The core of the conflict stems from the different goals of the involved factions:
The Avengers want to arrest Magneto and bring him before the World Court to stand trial for his past crimes.
The X-Men, who are allied with a reformed Magneto at this time, arrive to protect him.
A third group, the Soviet Super-Soldiers, is also hunting Magneto with the intent to kill him.
Issue #1 depicts this initial confrontation, as the Avengers attempt to take Magneto into custody, only to be challenged by the X-Men.
