X-Men #-1 (1997) (VF)

$5.00

X-Men #-1 (1997), titled "The Boy Who Saw Tomorrow!", is a special one-shot issue that delves into the past of Jean Grey and her connection to her future self, the time-traveling mutant Rachel Summers. The negative number was a part of Marvel Comics' "Flashback" or "-1" month in 1997, a company-wide event where many titles released a retro issue that filled in gaps in their characters' histories.

Plot summary

  • A flashback to Jean Grey's past: The story rewinds to the time following the death of Jean Grey's childhood friend, Annie Richardson, for which a young Jean was psychically connected. Professor Charles Xavier helped Jean cope with the event, which is why she is shown praying to him in gratitude. The peaceful Grey household is soon disturbed by a temporal disturbance.

  • The arrival of Rachel Summers: A time-displaced Rachel Summers—having been in a near-mindless state due to years adrift in the timestream—is pulled into the 20th century. Her mind-bending journey leads her to a partially constructed Master Mold, the first of the Sentinels.

  • The Trask family's clairvoyance: Bolivar Trask and his son, Lawrence, are featured in the issue. Lawrence has clairvoyant visions of the X-Men from the future, which lead his father to construct an amulet to help block the visions. The pair meet with Henry Peter Gyrich to advance their plans for building Sentinels.

  • A psychic confrontation: Rachel Summers is interrupted by Tanya Trask (who had been adrift in time with Rachel) in a mental projection. The two battle over whether to change the timeline, with Tanya arguing that it would avert tragedy and Rachel fearing an even greater catastrophe. Their fight leaves behind physical evidence that changes the Trasks' plans for the Master Mold.

  • A look into the future: The story touches upon future events, including the rise of Apocalypse and the importance of the "Twelve," a group of mutants whose destiny is central to a larger conflict.
