Wolverine #103 (1996) (VF)
Wolverine #103 (volume 2) from 1996 features Wolverine training with Elektra to regain his humanity after experiencing a feral regression. The issue, titled "Top of the World, Ma!" was written by Larry Hama with art by Val Semeiks.
Plot summary
The training begins: Seeking to overcome his bestial nature, Wolverine begins martial arts training with Elektra.
The first test: Elektra challenges Wolverine to climb the World Trade Center without tools. At the top, she asks him if he is a man or an animal. He hesitates, and she strikes him, proving his mind is not focused.
Lessons in a dojo: Inside a makeshift dojo on an upper floor, Elektra uses a scroll to teach Wolverine. It features the Chinese ideograms for "forest" and "wind." Wolverine recognizes the scroll and senses a missing component, but cannot place it.
The sword and the fridge: Elektra gives him another riddle: "A sword is naked fury... powerful, but dangerous if not properly wielded". She then locks him in a walk-in freezer to provoke him.
Winning the test: While trapped, Wolverine's meditation allows him to break free and remember the missing part of the scroll's message—the "mountain" ideogram, representing focus. After a final duel on a rooftop, Wolverine tricks Elektra by sheathing his sword in her scabbard, proving he has learned that self-control (sheathing the sword) is a greater victory than giving in to rage.
