In The New Mutants #32, Sunspot leads the team on a secret rescue mission to Madripoor to find Karma, who has apparently been controlling the other New Mutants. They are overwhelmed by Karma's power, and only Magik and Mirage escape to Limbo. Magik teleports them to Cairo, where they are transported to the distant past and meet an ancestor of Storm's.
The Mission: The New Mutants, believing Karma to be a traitor, travel to Madripoor to confront her and free the controlled members of their team.
Initial Failure: They quickly discover that Karma is much more powerful than they anticipated. Magik and Mirage are the only ones to escape the initial confrontation, fleeing to Limbo.
Unexpected Time Travel: After a plan to get help from Storm goes awry, Magik is forced to teleport Mirage to another of Karma's hideouts in Cairo. However, the involuntary teleportation sends them far into the past, where they encounter an ancestor of Storm's.
