The Immortal Hulk #22 (2019) (NM)

$4.00

The Immortal Hulk #22 is a story-driven issue that sets the stage for a major confrontation between Hulk's "monster" allies and the military organization Shadow Base. The story focuses heavily on character interactions and psychological horror, rather than relying on action.

Plot summary

  • The new Abomination: General Reginald Fortean, the head of Shadow Base, has grafted himself to the remains of the original Abomination. He becomes a new and horrifying version of the monster and insists he is in control, though it's clear he's unhinged and obsessed.

  • A revived Rick Jones: Former sidekick Rick Jones, whose consciousness was trapped inside the previous Abomination, was freed but is in a severely damaged, zombie-like state. In this issue, he shows signs of resurrection and begins speaking, revealing the location of Shadow Base's secret headquarters under Area 51.

  • Hulk's crew regroups: While hiding out in a hotel, Bruce Banner struggles to cope. His "Joe Fixit" persona takes over to offer support to journalist Jackie McGee, while Betty Ross—now the Harpy—refuses to speak with him.

  • Gamma Flight seeks revenge: The remaining members of Gamma Flight plot revenge against Fortean for killing their teammate Walter Langkowski (Sasquatch) and stealing the Abomination's body. Langkowski did not resurrect like other gamma mutates, raising concerns among the team.

  • The stage is set: Gamma Flight attempts to invade Shadow Base, but Fortean is waiting for them. The issue ends with the Hulk and his crew arriving to launch their own attack, kicking off the "Shadow Base War".
