The Avengers #267 (1986) (VF)

$5.00

The Avengers #267, published in May 1986, is a significant issue for introducing the multiversal villain group known as the Council of Kangs. The story, titled "Time—And Time Again!", follows Kang's schemes to eliminate all his alternate-reality counterparts and features the first appearance and death of one such variant.

The issue sets up a multi-part story arc with the following plot points:

  • A villain's plot: A Kang variant known as Kang-Prime works to destroy all other time-divergent duplicates of himself. He sets his sights on the final, most long-lived Kang.

  • The Avengers are lured into a trap: Kang-Prime transports the Wasp, Black Knight, and Hercules to the timeless realm of Limbo. He intends to use them to destroy the last Kang duplicate.

  • A classic villain's return: In Limbo, the heroes encounter what they believe are Iron Man, Hulk, and Giant-Man. However, the Wasp quickly realizes they are being impersonated by the Space Phantom, who has trapped them in Limbo before. The Avengers defeat a Kang robot before the real Kang-Prime reveals himself.

  • Political subplots: Back on Earth, public protests erupt against Namor the Sub-Mariner's recent membership on the Avengers team.

  • Character development: Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) reveals her secret identity, while Captain America reflects on her trustworthiness.

This issue, written by Roger Stern and penciled by John Buscema, is considered a collector's item from the "Copper Age" of comics.
