The costume is revealed as a symbiote: Peter, troubled by strange dreams and growing tiredness, asks Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four to analyze his new black suit. Mr. Fantastic's tests reveal the horrifying truth: the suit is a parasitic, sentient life form attempting to permanently bond with him.
Spider-Man removes the suit: A panicked Spider-Man struggles to remove the clinging symbiote, forcing Mr. Fantastic and the Human Torch to use a sonic blaster and flames to dislodge the alien. The symbiote is then contained in the Baxter Building.
The birth of the Bombastic Bag-Man: With his regular costume missing, Spider-Man has no way to get home without revealing his identity. The Human Torch jokingly gives him a spare Fantastic Four uniform, but it lacks a mask. Spidey is forced to wear a paper bag over his head and borrows a marker to write a "Kick Me" sign for his back.
Mary Jane and the Black Cat: Following the events of the previous issue where Mary Jane revealed she knows Peter's secret, she attempts to talk to him. However, the conversation is cut short when the Black Cat appears at Peter's window. This puts Peter in an emotional tailspin, torn between the two women.
The symbiote's anger: While the symbiote is locked away in containment at the Baxter Building, it seethes with hatred for Peter. This sets the stage for its eventual escape and subsequent bonding with Eddie Brock to form Venom.
