Fallen Angels #1 Direct Edition (1987) (NM)
Fallen Angels #1 (1987), titled "Runaway," follows the mutant Sunspot as he leaves the New Mutants after a devastating soccer match. The issue, written by Jo Duffy, was the first in an eight-issue limited series from Marvel Comics.
The story begins with the New Mutants playing a heated game of soccer. After Sunspot, a.k.a. Roberto da Costa, accidentally injures his best friend Cannonball during a competitive play, the other teammates turn on him out of fear. Already feeling isolated, Roberto retreats to the X-Mansion, where he discovers his report card containing a note from Professor Xavier speculating that Roberto might one day turn evil like his father. Convinced he is a villain, Roberto runs away.
The issue also features two parallel subplots:
An overwhelmed Magneto, who is temporarily running the school, calls for help from Moira MacTaggert, who arrives with the young mutants Siryn and Multiple Man.
While wandering New York, Roberto encounters a young girl named Chance and tries to save her from thugs, but his powers mysteriously fail him.
