Doom 2099 #9 (1993) (VF)
In Doom 2099 #9, titled "The Spirits Within Me," Doom and his cyber-savant Wire journey into a cyberspace version of Doom's subconscious. There, they attempt to retrieve Doom's fragmented memories. The story was a standalone "fill-in" issue written and drawn by Ernie Colón.
Plot summary
The plot centers on Doom's quest to recover his complete memories, which were scrambled when he first appeared in the year 2099.
Wire, an expert in the Cyberweb, assists Doom by guiding him into his own virtual mindscape.
Once inside his mind, Doom confronts monstrous and villainous figures from his unconscious, drawn from real-world history and fiction, including Jack the Ripper and Frankenstein's monster.
The journey is an abstract narrative focused on retrieving information rather than Doom's usual physical conquests.
By the end of the issue, Doom's allies are left questioning what knowledge he gained from the experience, but his memories remain a mystery.
