Deathblow #1 (1993) (VF)
Deathblow #1 (1993) is a Wildstorm comic that follows Michael Cray, an elite but terminally ill special-ops mercenary, as he confronts the bloody past of his career. The issue is also notable for the distinct art style that co-creator Jim Lee used for the story.
Plot synopsis:
Feeling remorse over a life spent killing, Michael Cray enters a confessional booth in a Washington, D.C., church and reflects on his actions as a government operative.
Overwhelmed by his guilt and impending death from cancer, he puts a gun to his head but cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. He leaves the church when a priest approaches.
On the flip side of the comic, which featured a separate "Cybernary" story, a renegade cyborg battles with cyborg Hunter-Killers on Gamorra Island.
Publication details:
The comic was published by Image Comics under Jim Lee's Wildstorm imprint in April 1993.
The cover had a red foil-stamped logo and a flipbook featuring the backup story "Cybernary".
While this was the first issue of the Deathblow solo series, the character Michael Cray first appeared in Darker Image #1 just a month earlier.
Artwork:
Co-creator Jim Lee's art style for this series was a significant departure from his earlier work, featuring a grittier, high-contrast, and textured aesthetic reminiscent of Frank Miller. Lee later revealed he was experimenting with a darker style for this story.
