Following the nuclear-scale blast caused by Captain Atom, the remaining survivors gather in safe havens.
Lex Luthor surprisingly appears, alive and remorseful. He offers his assistance to the surviving heroes, leading a project to build "arks"—spaceships to carry Earth's survivors to a new world if necessary.
Meanwhile, Damian Wayne (now Batman), Green Lantern Dinah Lance, and Green Arrow meet with Poison Ivy. They broker a deal to create a sanctuary for survivors in a new, overgrown Gotham City.
At Superman's Fortress of Solitude, an infected Martian Manhunter appears, killing Lex Luthor and infecting the Flash (Barry Allen).
Superman is forced to destroy the Flash before the speedster can spread the virus across the globe. However, during the confrontation, Superman is also infected.
Before his transformation, Superman shares a heart-wrenching farewell with his family and flies into space to protect them from his coming change.
