The fall of Captain Atom: The issue opens with Amanda Waller and her Cadmus scientists using Captain Atom and the Atom (Ray Palmer) to find a cure for the Anti-Life Equation. However, the infected Atom turns on Captain Atom from the inside, causing him to become a living, ticking bomb.
A rallying cry for survivors: At the Daily Planet, Superman, Lois Lane, and the other surviving heroes use the old analog TV and radio systems to broadcast a message of hope. They invite any remaining heroes and survivors to gather at their fortified location.
A new Batman emerges: Alfred Pennyworth arrives in Metropolis with a newly upgraded Batwing and a surprise for Damian Wayne. The young Robin is given a new batsuit and takes on the mantle of Batman.
Cyborg's arrival: An injured Cyborg, who has been missing since the start of the outbreak, arrives at the Daily Planet. He delivers a crucial piece of information: the infected victims are dead, with their bodies controlled by the Anti-Life virus.
Captain Atom's detonation: After Wonder Woman and Superman fail to stop the infected Captain Atom, he detonates in a massive explosion. The blast destroys Washington, D.C., and spreads rapidly, engulfing Metropolis and leaving the fate of the survivors at the Daily Planet unknown.
